The Telegraph Branch was created in 1853 under the Post and Telegraph Department in then British India and was subsequently regulated under the Telegraph Act-1885. In 1962, the Telegraph Branch was reorganized into the Pakistan Telegraph and Telephone Department in the then East Pakistan. In 1971, after the independence of Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Department was established under the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications. It was converted into a corporate body named 'Telegraph and Telephone Board' by the Telegraph and Telephone Board Ordinance, 1975. According to an ordinance of 1979, the Telefilm and Telephone Board was transformed into the Bangladesh Telegraph and Telephone Board (BTTB). A government board. From July 1, 2008, as per the Telecommunication Policy, 1998, BTTB was converted into a Public Limited Company – Bangladesh Telecommunication Company Limited by another Ordinance.


Currently BTCL (Bangladesh Telecommunications Company Limited) is a state-owned telecommunication company. BTCL is bringing services to people's doorsteps by expanding the reach of telecommunication systems. After the launch of the 2nd submarine cable, the transmission disturbance of telecommunication and internet services in the region has been reduced to zero. Also the bandwidth has been brought to the desired value.

Assistant Manager Telecom Magura with 4 upazilas including district headquarter, Magura Telecom unit manpower, administrative, maintenance and all activities related to telephone and from the said office all activities related to new telephone connection, telephone relocation, Internet, ISD, ADSL are carried out. 4 Telephone Exchanges, 13 Union Fibers, 5 School-College LLI Connections, 3 Upazila Health Complex/4 Election Commission Connections including other optical fiber connections are repaired/maintained in 4 Upazilas including GPON at Magura.
